Chapter Twenty-six

When Ruth finally came back, she’d removed her make-up and nail varnish. She’d showered under the supervision of her masked tormentor, so all traces of perfume and luxury foods were washed down the plug hole. She again wore her baggy top and pyjama trousers. Ruth’s bare feet dragged along the ground.

Delilah stared. Ruth was like a paper doll, so thin and fragile. Delilah could see Ruth’s hair had been washed, though its sleek shine was a horrible contrast to the woman’s emotionally ragged state. Ruth’s eyes were the worst. Being forced to go with the mask and having to play along with its games had destroyed Ruth from the inside out. Seeing the pain in her friend cut Delilah like a knife.

Kirsten was cooing and shushing, trying to console Ruth and Delilah felt her heart breaking. They were useless. Helpless. There was nothing they could do for Ruth. And Kirsten might as well save her energy because Ruth wasn’t responding. Was she even listening? It was as if Ruth had been swallowed whole by a black pit of despair.

Kirsten kept trying and it was so touching it filtered through to whoever Delilah had been before she came here. Something awakened. Sitting there helpless and hopeless, pressed against the bars as close to her two new friends as she could, Delilah had a sudden knowing. It was a sudden recall that told her she wasn’t someone who gave up. She was a fighter. And as the newest one here, she had to use her strength while she still had it. It was her responsibility to help them all.

‘This can’t continue.’

Her words cut across Kirsten. The other two women were startled.

’We’ve got to get out of here. We’ve got to escape.’

‘There’s no way,’ Kirsten said. ‘If you try anything they’ll half beat you or stun you to death.’

‘I’d rather die than…’ Delilah let it trail off and the unspoken horrors hung between them – rape, torture, humiliation.

‘It’s impossible. Don’t you think we’d have tried?’ Kirsten said. ‘They’re a bunch of sadistic killers. All in tune with each other like they’ve been brainwashed by fucking Satan. We don’t stand a chance.’

‘Satan doesn’t exist. There’s a person behind all this. A lunatic, yeah, I realise that. And maybe we don’t have a hope in hell,’ Delilah said. ‘But we’ve got to try.’

Kirsten was shaking her head. ‘We can’t.’

‘Listen to me, we’ve got to.’

‘I didn’t tell you,’ Kirsten said. ‘There was a woman in your cell before you came. Her name was Melissa and she was here when I arrived. Her hair was falling out in fistfuls. Let me tell you something else – do you want to know the reason Ruth started losing it?’

A woman in this cell before her? The notion hadn’t occurred to her.

Kirsten was gripping the bars of her cell and the whites of her eyes were huge. ‘Do you want to know what happened to Melissa! She was taken away for the Ceremony!’ Kirsten was practically screaming. ‘Afterwards, Ruth was taken and she had to mop up buckets and buckets of blood.
